Orrin Evans + Tim Green: Live From 92Y Tribeca

The latest edition of The Checkout: Live sees two musicians journey north up the turnpike to meet their peers in New York City.

Orrin Evans splits much of his time between Philadelphia, where he grew up, and New York, a much larger jazz scene where he gigs often. A hard-charging pianist, seasoned with the harmonic touch of fellow Philadelphian McCoy Tyner, Evans is in high demand in a lot of places. Last year saw him release his 19th album as a bandleader or co-leader, Flip the Script. It’s a trio recording, a format which both intimidates and excites him; here, he takes up the three-man challenge anew.

Alto saxophonist Tim Green is no stranger to New York, having studied at the Manhattan School of Music. He’s also lived in Los Angeles, where he attended the Thelonious Monk Institute’s handpicked masters program. But he’s again settled in Baltimore, where he grew up. Since he got home, he’s finished up his first recording, Songs From This Season, which casts musicians from up and down the East Coast to execute his compositions. He’ll bring his impassioned delivery to a quintet gig (featuring Orrin Evans on piano) here.

Tim Green’s quintet precedes Orrin Evans’ trio on stage at the 92Y Tribeca in downtown New York City, as part of the WBGO concert series The Checkout: Live. WBGO and NPR Music present a live radio broadcast and online video webcast of the twin bill, starting at 8 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Feb. 20.
