Gretchen Parlato is one of the most exciting vocalists to come along in years. She has a unique, breathy delivery that immediately brings the listener into her intimate world. She’s won almost every award you can think of since her debut album in 2005, and her latest album, The Lost And Found has been hailed worldwide and one of the best.
Parlato grew up in Los Angeles, the daughter of a professional bassist. She attended the Los Angeles County School for the Arts, UCLA, and then entered the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz performance where she got to work with heavies such as Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Terence Blanchard and others.
Today’s song is the title track from her second album, In a Dream, featuring Lionel Loueke on guitar and vocals, Aaron Parks on piano and Fender Rhodes, Derrick Hodge on acoustic and electric bass and Kendrick Scott on drums. These cats know how to set a mood!
Parlato has also been friends and made music with bassist and vocalist Esperanza Spalding for many years. Check out this amazing duet on Jobim’s “Inutil Paisagem.”
