Artscape: Keeping Jazz in the Family
If you love jazz, then you know it's often a family affair. Here's one example: the Heath Brothers Quartet performed at Jazz Port Townsend, with Jimmy Heath on tenor saxophone and Tootie Heath on drums. Along with their late brother Percy, the Heaths are just one of the great sibling stories in jazz. KPLU's Kirsten Kendrick and Nick Morrison discuss more musical families as part of a list that Nick prepared for NPR.
Post-War Rhythm And Blues: Bridging Jazz, Rock
Many jazz artists who were active in the 1950s will tell you that the rise of rock 'n' roll marked the death of jazz as a form of popular music. While there might be truth in that observation, it seems equally true that, without jazz, rock 'n' roll might never have happened; at least it wouldn't have happened as it did.
Stride Piano: Bottom-End Jazz
If ragtime piano can be seen as the starting point in the evolution of jazz piano, then the next step in that evolutionary process wasn't a step all; it was a "stride."
Celebrating the Many Talents of Nat King Cole
To celebrate the many talents of this versatile performer, KPLU music host Mary McCann compiled a list of five Nat King Cole songs. Mary talked with KPLU's Kirsten Kendrick about some of the songs, which showcase Nat King Cole's incredible range.
