Maddie Vogler, “While We Have Time”
After successfully receiving her Bachelors and Masters in Music Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the highly in demand Chicago based saxophonist, composer and educator makes her way to the scene with her debut album. Released September, 2023 via Origin Records While We Have Time features original compositions from Vogler in trio and quartet settings which former classmate, Tito Carrillo (Trumpet). Vogler's new album is one of the most accessible and easy-to-listen-albums of the year. A great listen for new and expert jazz fans.
Ambrose Akinmusire, Owl Song
Insomniacs are in for a treat, or cure rather, as Ambrose is the narrator of the night on his latest release Owl Song. Another album we just missed last year; released towards the end of 2023, (December), via Nonesuch Records, the trumpeter makes his label debut featuring a trio of musicians Ambrose has admired since he began playing. Along with seasoned veterans Bill Frisell (Guitar) and Herlin Riley (Drums), the trio produce the perfect, mellow blend of music perfect for any night. While all three can and have shown off their chops, this recording is more of a collaborative effort, an acoustic DIY feel, as the trio kept it simple with a minimalist approach, highlighted on tunes such as “Mr Frisell,” and “Mr. Riley.”
Charles Chen, Charles, Play!
Charles, Play! features the Californian pianist who, much like Ambrose, had the chance to perform with some of his musical heroes. Charles taps into his inner child on his debut album, released Jan 2024 via Cellar Music Group. Straight ahead jazz aficionados in Peter Washington (Bass), Kenny Washington (Drums), and Ralph Moore (Saxophone) blaze through a mix of standards and originals on this nine track album.
