Rachael & Vilray Return With New Holiday-Themed Song, “Just Me This Year”

The duo Rachael & Vilray— singer/songwriter Rachael Price and the guitarist/singer/songwriter Vilray Blair Bolles —return with Just Me This Year, written by Vilray, about the pleasures of spending the winter holidays alone after a welcome romantic breakup. “For those who happen to be going it alone this time of year, we’re here to help you embrace the freedom!” said Vilray. Their partnership began from their time studying together at Boston’s New England Conservatory of Music. Rachael & Vilray compose witty, worldly jazz standards that bring us back to the 1940s and ’50s. In 2019, they released their self-titled debut of jazzy new works with such guests as Jon Batiste joining on piano. It’s a little kitsch, a little classy, and tons of fun, and they are releasing a new album in January, I Love a Love Song.

“Just Me This Year” is a jazzy ode to the joys of single life during the holidays. In the opening verse, our songstress finds herself unduly dumped just a week before Christmas. What follows are five delightful minutes of finding herself and having a holly, jolly Christmas for one. After several verses of eating, playing (in the snow), taking herself shopping (truly, the only way to guarantee you won’t be disappointed with what’s under the tree), and self-loving her way through the holidays, she has the epiphany: “The greatest gift I could receive/ Was just for him to leave.”
